Web1969. In 1969 Literacy Volunteers was introduced to the State of Maine by Sister Benigna and Agnes Beckwith. Two years later, 1971, a Basic Reading Workshop was held at Bath and Peg Morrill was the first person in the Augusta area to attend. In November of 1972, she held the first Basic Reading Workshop in the greater Augusta area. WebWe live in Western Maine, one of the most rural parts of the U.S. We are life long learners with free, weekly classes offered. We are trained volunteer tutors, who work with their adult students every week. We are volunteers, giving time and skills. We are collaborators to promote literacy. (we network with 61 organizations in the community)
